Wetland, Jerrabomberra Creek, Dairy Road Fyshwick
The new wetland off Dairy Road in Fyshwick will connect to an existing channel, creating a much larger chain of functional wetlands. Construction will be completed by the end of June 2019.
Once part of Jerrabomberra Creek, the old channel has minimal stormwater flow but the new works will make it functional once more.
The total treatment area of 9,200 square metres makes the Dairy Road wetland one of the biggest of the ACT Healthy Waterways projects and will have a significant impact on the stormwater that flows into Jerrabomberra Creek and downstream into Lake Burley Griffin.
The wetlands will remove over 70,000 kg of nitrogen, phosphorous and suspended solids every year from stormwater that flows into Jerrabomberra Creek.
Located wholly within the Jerrabomberra Wetlands, it is surrounded by many formal and informal trails, paths and boardwalks. Existing adjacent tracks have been retained and upgraded and some of these have also been combined with new paths to create a loop that is sure to be popular with walkers and pedestrians
There are two more ACT Healthy Waterways projects in the area – at Eyre Street in Kingston and Matina Street in Narrabundah.
Design changes
The original plan presented to the community involved the creation of a vegetated swale. The upgrade to a functional wetland will increase its capacity for water quality treatment and add to the surrounding environment.
