Rock Art Monitoring Program
Preserving ancient rock art sites in the ACT
The Namadgi Rock Art Monitoring Program involves the management of rock art sites in Namadgi National Park. This program is a collaborative partnership between Healthy Country, Namadgi National Park and the local Aboriginal community, established in 2008 to facilitate the development of a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for all the rock art sites.
Healthy Country provides annual training in rock art assessment, maintenance and recording techniques and ensures an Aboriginal perspective to the conservation of the sites.
The Namadgi Rock Art Working Group meets biannually to advise management on the implementation and further development of the CMP. The group also assists with the annual monitoring and maintenance work at the sites.
Representatives on the Namadgi Rock Art Working Group includes the ACT Registered Aboriginal Organisations:
- King Brown Tribal Group (Ngunnawal)
- Buru Ngunnawal Aboriginal Corporation
- Mirabei (Ngambri)
- Ngarigu Currawong Clan
- United Ngunnawal Elders Council
- Parks and Conservation Service Aboriginal employees
- Namadgi National Park staff
The Namadgi Rock Art Working Group won the 2011 ACT Leighton Indigenous Landcare Award and was one of 88 finalists in the 2012 National Landcare Awards.
