Gang-gang Cockatoo feather collection project
This project aims to better understand the population genetics of Gang-gang Cockatoos in the region through feather collection.
Feathers contain genetic information unique to an individual. They provide insights into the biology and ecology of birds that are otherwise challenging to sample, and in a way that is not intrusive.
By learning about the genetic variability of Gang-gangs, we can estimate their ‘effective population size’. Knowing the population size of a species, and monitoring changes to this over time, can directly inform planning and implementing conservation actions. Genetic information extracted from Gang-gang feathers may also provide insights into their habitat use, mating systems and conservation status across their range.
How you can help
To take part in this project, the ACT Government, together with the ANU Difficult Bird Research Group, are asking the community to keep an eye out for Gang-gang feathers and notify us at GangGangsACT@act.gov.au when you have some to contribute to the genetic analysis.
Gang-gangs have eight main feather types, all of which contain DNA. To become familiar with Gang-gang feathers, read the Gang-gang Cockatoo feather identification handbook (2.7 MB).
This project is licenced under Section 273 of the Nature Conservation Act 2014 (483.5 KB).
Tips for collection and storage
- The better the condition of a feather, the best chance we have of extracting genetic information. Nevertheless, please collect any feather you believe to be from a Gang-gang.
- Genetic information is collected from the end of the quill – avoid excessive handling at this end.
- If the feather is wet, air dry at room temperature before storing in an envelope.
- Each feather should be placed in its own sealed envelope. However, if you find several feathers at the same location (that you believe to be from the same individual), they can be stored together.
- On the outside of each envelope please carefully print the name of the collector, the location you collected the feather from (GPS coordinates are ideal) and the date of collection.
- Please use gloves or be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after handling feathers.
