Threatened species action plans

Action plans help protect threatened species and ecological communities in the ACT.

The Nature Conservation Act 2014 requires the Conservator of Flora and Fauna to prepare an action plan for each applicable listed threatened native species, ecological community or key threatening process as determined by the Minister for the Environment. Some listed threatened native species may not require an action plan to be developed by the Conservator if the Minister determines that the species does not occur (e.g. locally extinct), occurs infrequently in the ACT or having no plan will not increase the risk of extinction of the species.

An action plan outlines conservation and protection proposals for the species or community concerned or proposals to minimise the effect of threatening processes. The primary objective is to maintain for the long term, viable wild populations of each species (or samples of the ecological community) as components of the indigenous biological resources of the ACT. Each action plan must be released as a draft for public comment.

The statutory action plans for the species marked (*) are now contained in the 2019 ACT Native Woodland Conservation Strategy (10.7 MB) and associated action plans. The individual action plans are listed below.

The statutory action plans for the species marked (**) are now contained in the 2017 ACT Native Grassland Conservation Strategy (10.7 MB) and associated action plans. The individual action plans are listed below.

The statutory action plans for the species marked (***) are now contained in the 2018 ACT Aquatic and Riparian Conservation Strategy (11.7 MB). However, these individual action plans have been retained on this website as they still contain relevant information on the species or communities.

Migratory species

27 internationally-listed migratory birds are known to visit the ACT, some coming from as far as Japan, China and Siberia. We have an international responsibility to maintain their preferred habitat in the ACT and contribute to international research on these birds.

The  Action Plan for Listed Migratory Species (17.3 MB) aims to protect, restore and enhance important wetland, wildlife corridors and breeding habitat in the ACT. It will manage identified threats to important sites and habitat and improve our knowledge about the occurrence and management of listed migratory species.
