Stage 2 - Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate

We are expanding our infrastructure options in Stage 2 of the Healthy Waterways program by trialling a range of designs that are either new to the ACT or are old designs being used in new situations. The Stage 2 assets are trials of innovative designs that will expand the management options for the ACT Government to draw from in future water quality improvement initiatives.

We examined seven catchments across Canberra for possible sites to trial new asset designs:

Yerrabi Pond
Kippax Creek
Emu Creek, Belconnen
Yarralumla
Kambah Creek
Fadden arm of Tuggeranong Creek
Tuggeranong Creek

These catchments were selected based on recognised water quality problems and demand from stakeholders.

Thirteen asset designs/locations were then chosen based on:

High level of innovation
Geography – across Canberra
Performance – good cost benefit
Local support for water quality works

An asset was chosen from each catchment except the Yarralumla catchment, where the sites we examined were less suited to the innovations we are trialling. For an explanation of each asset type, visit the types of infrastructure page.
