Formed in 1954, the ANU Design Unit was initially tasked to design and arrange the manufacture of furniture and furnishings for the newly established Australian National University.  Under the direction of Derek Wrigley, the Unit embraced a concept of ‘total design’. This exhibition celebrates the work and legacy of this unique group of designers and makers. The exhibition has been developed by ANU Heritage and is proudly presented by Canberra Museum and Gallery. Electrifying and avant-garde, Marion Hall Best was the most flamboyant Australian interior designer from the 1950s to the 1970s. This exhibition presents textiles, furnishings and imagery. Attributed with introducing international modernism to the Australian market, Best brought this style to Canberra with a commission for the Lobby Restaurant, featured in the exhibition. Presented by CMAG, Marian Hall Best: Interior is a traveling exhibition from Sydney Living Museum. Open Monday-Saturday.

The exhibition includes glasses, rummer glasses, jugs, serving ware and candlesticks highlighting stylistic changes in English glass driven by advances in technology and  changes in the way people ate,drank and socialized. Glass was scarce in Colonial Australia until about 1800 When more ships carrying goods for sale began to arrive.
