Native fish released into local lakes

Almost 60,000 native fish were released this month in lakes and ponds across Canberra. They will provide future fishing opportunities for anglers while also helping establish more balanced ecosystems and relieving fishing pressure on the ACT’s more fragile rivers and streams.

Golden Perch were released in Lake Ginninderra (15,500), Gungahlin Pond (3000) and Yerrabi Pond (3000), while Murray Cod (5000) were released in Lake Tuggeranong.

Murray Cod (2000) and Golden Perch (approximately 3200) were released in Upper Stranger Pond and Fadden Pond to establish a native fish population following carp removal in 2017.

Approximately 27,300 Murray Cod were also released into Lake Burley Griffin as part of the National Capital Authority’s stocking program.
