Release of the Action Plan to prevent the Loss of Mature Native Trees in the ACT
We are pleased to announce the finalisation of the Action Plan to prevent the Loss of Mature Native Trees in the ACT. This plan is the result of extensive consultations with the community and is aimed at protecting mature native trees aged 60+ years old, especially hollow-bearing trees, and ensuring a steady stream of new trees are given the chance to reach maturity.
These venerable native trees hold a critical role in our ecosystem, providing sustenance, shelter, and essential services that younger trees cannot replicate. They also serve as habitats for numerous bird and other animal species, including threatened species such as the Superb Parrot, Little Eagle, and Brown Treecreeper.
Mature native trees face multiple threats including development, land clearing, fire, climate change, and dieback. Fun fact: some mature trees can live for up to 500 years!
It is imperative that we act now to safeguard these living treasures and considering the increased threats from development and urbanisation, we all need to do our part to re-establish the environment’s natural diversity and improve ecosystem resilience.
