Did you know that smoke from domestic wood heaters is one of the main sources of air pollution in Canberra?

Using your wood heater correctly will help improve our air quality, save you money and keep your home warm this winter.

Things you can do to help protect Canberra's air quality when using your wood heater include:

  • A well-maintained heater and flue will increase the efficiency of your heater. Have your flue swept prior to every heating season.
  • Buy wood from a reputable firewood merchant and store it in a well-ventilated covered space.
  • Don't overfill your heater – use two or three small logs, never one large log.
  • Only use dry, well-seasoned, untreated wood.
  • Don't let your fire smoulder overnight - keep the air control open enough to maintain a flame.

For more information, please refer to Your guide to using a wood heater.

Remember – you can receive a rebate when replacing, remove or decommission a wood heater through the Wood Heater Replacement Program.

Visit the Actsmart Wood Heater Replacement Program (WHRP) webpage or call Access Canberra on 13 22 81 for more information on rebates and hints on reducing smoke pollution and saving money.
