Ian was a member of the Ministerial Council of the Murray-Darling Basin Community Advisory Committee for 4 years. He also was a member of the Basin Community Committee of the Murray-Darling Basin Authority for 4 years. He has First Class Honours in Agricultural Science, a PhD in Biological Chemistry and a Doctor of Science Award for distinguished research in mammalian endocrinology.

Ian has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for Chemistry in the United Kingdom for distinguished contributions to chemistry.  He holds Honorary qualifications from Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (the agricultural university) and Prince of Songkla University, Thailand, for his assistance with their development over a period totaling 25 years.

Ian’s professional interest is in water quality. His appointment as Officer of the Order of Australia was for Science, especially quality of drinking water, with membership of the National Health and Medical Research Council, World Health Organisation and Pan American Health Organisation expert committees. His academic career includes Executive Dean of Science, Rural Science and Natural Resource Management at the University of New England, and Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Adelaide.
