Tips to reduce greenhouse emissions

Most emissions from homes are from the fossil fuels burned to generate electricity and heat. By using energy more efficiently at home, ACT residents can reduce emissions and lower energy bills.

What can I do?

  1. Replace a regular light bulb with energy saving light bulb and switch to green power
  2. Move your thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer
  3. Avoid using air conditioners and where cooling is required, use evaporative air conditioners
  4. Choose energy efficient appliances when making new purchases
  5. Use less hot water
  6. Use a clothesline instead of a dryer whenever possible
  7. Turn off electronic devices you are not using at the switch, avoid standby mode as well.
  8. Only run your dishwasher, washing machine and dryer when there is a full load and use the energy-saving setting
  9. Insulate your home
  10. Be sure you are recycling at home and at work
  11. Get a home energy audit through ACT EnergyWise and install a water efficient showerhead.
  12. Buy locally grown and produced foods and avoid heavily packaged products
  13. Reduce the number of kilometres you drive by walking, cycling, carpooling or taking public transport wherever possible
  14. Keep your car tuned up and check your tyres weekly to make sure they are properly inflated
  15. When it is time for a new car, choose a more fuel efficient vehicle
