ACT Greenhouse Gas Inventory
In 2008-09 the ACT’s net greenhouse gas emissions totalled 4.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.
The most recent detailed data on the ACT's Greenhouse Gas emissions is from the
ACT Greenhouse Gas Inventory 2009
(1.0 MB).
The inventory was developed on behalf of the Government by the Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission. The aim of the ACT greenhouse gas inventory is to provide a clear understanding of both the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions and the ‘greenhouse intensity’ - the amount of emissions per capita.
Outcomes for 2009 include:
- Total carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) emissions are 2,268 kilotonnes.
- Emissions from electricity consumption are 63.6% of total emissions, excluding and land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF), and are the main contributor to emissions growth since 1990.
- Per capita emissions peaked in 2006 at 12.3 tonnes, and in 2009 were 11.9 tonnes.
- Renewable energy attributable to consumption under the mandatory Renewable Energy Target and through GreenPower purchases comprised 3.39% and 3.7% of total electricity consumed in the ACT respectively.
