Fire management is a specialised activity with a number of associated hazards. It requires comprehensive skills and expertise. TAMS provides training inline with the Public Safety Training Package as well as the ACT RFS and other fire management agencies to ensure staff are trained appropriately. TAMS also assesses each staff member yearly to ensure they are competent to fulfil the fire management role, which is determined based on resource requirements and individual training programs.
All fire staff attend an annual fire preparedness day to refresh their skills. A variety of exercises including fire simulations, tactical decision game and other field exercises are used for skill development. This also aids in reviewing readiness of each participant for the upcoming fire season, as well as identifying weaknesses to be improved by future training.
