Seasonal work program

Bushland adjacent to urban area Each year, the Fire Management Unit of the Parks and Conservation Service (PCS) provide temporary employment opportunities for people to join the seasonal fire crews and help keep Canberra and our natural environment safe.

Crews are inducted into the PCS fire management program and undertake a range of training including basic fire training, 4WD operation, chainsaw etc. Throughout their contract they will perform a wide range of duties, however their primary role is undertaking bushfire mitigation works. Works include physical removal, preparation of prescribed burning sites, fuel hazard assessments, fire tower operations and fire trail maintenance. Crews also facilitate work in the urban areas of Canberra to allow mowing and grazing of fire prone areas.

Seasonal fire crews assist in delivering the prescribed burn program and provide an increased firefighting capacity for PCS. Seasonal firefighters gain valuable skills, qualifications and considerable hands-on experience during their employment and this often assists them in gaining permanent employment with PCS, or other land management agencies across Australia.
